Shamal is a Counselling Psychologist, Trainer, and Supervisor. She holds a Master’s in Applied Psychology (Specialization in Counselling Psychology) from TISS, Mumbai, and a South Asian Diploma in Narrative Practices.
She runs the We Belong Mental Health Initiative, where she facilitates support groups and workshops for students from Dalit-Adivasi communities, with the hope of co-creating a safe, supportive, and therapeutic community space. As part of this initiative, she has recently started a collective documenting project, "Noticing the Unnoticed – Crafting Untold Stories of Resistance to Caste-Based Discrimination."
In her private practice, she works with individuals and couples using a trauma-informed and social justice-informed approach. She takes an affirmative stance—feminist, anti-caste, neurodivergent, and queer-affirmative. She strongly believes that committing to these stances is a lifelong journey of learning and unlearning.
When she’s not working, she enjoys taking naps, spending time with her cat companion, Ghugi, pausing to doodle, reading children's picture books, and watching her plants grow and bloom.
