Lavkant Chaudhary (b. 1988) is an artist based in Kathmandu and from Sarlahi, Nepal. His art addresses issues related to the history, society, and politics of the Tarai region; particularly as it concerns the indigenous Tharu peoples and their struggle for rights and recognition. Chaudhary’s first solo exhibition “MAASINYA DASTOOR'' was held at Siddhartha Art Gallery, Kathmandu in December 2019. He also participated in the Students’ Biennale 2018, a part of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. He completed his BFA from Lalit Kala Campus in 2015 and is currently pursuing an MFA from Tribhuvan University.
Chaudhary is also a member of Artree Nepal, a collective which uses grassroots interventions to counter hierarchical social structures of religion, caste, class, and gender. The collective has also focused on deconstructing the processes of internal and external colonization in Nepali history, which is obfuscated in mainstream narratives. Their mixed-media installation title “Not Less Expensive Than Gold” was exhibited at the Sydney Biennale 2020.
